Give whoever runs the Visit Scotland program a massive raise. The tourism board’s newest campaign features Shetland ponies Fivla and Vitamin sporting some very handsome Shetland wool cardigans made by local Shetland knitter Doreen Brown.

Needless to say, our new life goal is meeting Fivla and Vitamin.

Seriously, Scotland is so good at promoting itself. I will never forget the Scottish literary week in New York that I covered for KGB Bar Lit. I got to hang out with two charming Scottish authors, who thanked me profusely for interviewing them about their (excellent) novels, and then their press manager gave me an expensive bottle of the best, smokiest, peatiest Scotch I’d ever tasted.
